Mysore chutney recipe, Spicy red chutney, Chana dal chutney

Mysore chutney/ Spicy red chutney/ Chana dal chutney is a traditional spicy chutney made while preparing regular or mysore masala dosa at my home. Mysore chutney is prepared with bengal gram/ split chana dal and dried red chilli acting as main ingredient, while adding onion or coconut depends upon each ones taste and family tradition. We make this chutney with onions more often as it more tasty. Ingredients

  • Channa dal/ Bengal gram – 3 tbsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Dried red chilli – 5
  • Onion – 1 (small)
  • Tamarind – a tiny piece
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 1 tsp

Ingredients For tempering

  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – a spring
  • Hing – a pinch
  • Oil – 1 tsp

How to make Mysore chutney with step by step images

  1. Heat oil in a pan, add bengal gram/ chana dal, urad dal and dried red chilli. When dal turns light golden color add chopped onion cubes. Saute well.
  2. Now add tiny piece of tamarind and saute for a minute. Put off the and allow the mixture to cool down.

  3. Now transfer the cooled mixture to a blender, add salt and grind it into a paste adding little water.

  4. Now heat oil in a small pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters add urad dal, when it turns golden brown add curry leaves and hing. Put off the flame and pour the mixture over the ground chutney. Serve it with dosa or masala dosa!
