Medhu bonda recipe, Instant besan bonda

Medhu bonda/ Besan bonda is an instant and very easy to make tea time snack prepared with just handful ingredients. Yes all you need is just coffee/ chai making time to prepare these bondas. Medhu bonda/ kadalai maavu bonda have crispy outer and soft interior make it great accompany with a cup of tea/ coffee. This is my hubby’s favorite favorite snack that I learnt from my MIL and has been really handy on rainy days or when sudden guests come home. For the below recipe the onion and green chilli added needs to be finely chopped as it shouldn’t be dominant. So lets get to the making!

Ingredients

  • Besan – ½ cup
  • Rice flour – 1 tbsp
  • Baking soda – ¼ tsp
  • Water – ¼ cup + 1 tbsp
  • Onion – ¼ cup (finely chopped)
  • Green chilli – 1 (finely chopped)
  • Curry leaves – (finely chopped)

* My 1 cup = 235 ml

How to make Medhu bonda with step by step images


  1. In a bowl add besan flour/ kadalai maavu, rice flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well.
  2. Now add water to the mixture and mix well to form a thick batter.
  3. Now add chopped onion, green chilli and curry leaves. Mix well.Heat oil in a frying pan, take small amounts of batter and drop it gently in batter to form round shaped bondas.
  4. Fry the bondas in medium flame to get even coloring and cooked interior. When done remove the bonda from oil using slotted spoon and transfer it to a plate with paper towel. Serve it hot with chutney and coffee/ chai!
