Ingredients
- 1. Rice – 1 cup
- 2. Toor dal – ¼ cup
- 3. Carrot – 1 (small)
- 4. Green beans – 8 to 10
- 5. Potato – 1
- 6. Onion – 1 (small)
- 7. Tomato – 1
- 8. Tamarind – small gooseberry size
- 9. Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
- 10 Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
- 11. Sambar powder – 1 tbsp
- 12. Coriander powder – ½ tsp
- 13. Salt – to taste
- 14. Ghee - 1 tbsp
To Temper
- 1. Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
- 2. Curry leaves – a spring
- 3. Dried red chilli – 2
- 4. Oil – 1 tsp
Note
- * 1 cup = 235 ml
Instructions
- Was rice and toor dal in water. Soak rice and toor dal together in water for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes cook rice dal in electric cooker or pressure cooker for 3 to 4 whistles until done.
- Soak tamarind in ½ cup warm water and extract tamarind juice and keep it aside. Chop veggies and keep it aside.
- When done mash rice and dal well and keep it aside.
- Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds, after it splutters add curry leaves and cubed onions. Saute well and add chopped vegetables, turmeric powder, salt, red chilli powder, sambar powder and coriander powder. Mix well and add tamarind extract along with 1 cup water. Mix well and allow the veggies to cook. When veggies look cooked add mashed dal and rice mixture. Give it a good stir and put off the flame when everything looks combined. When everything looks combined garnish it with chopped cilantro and serve it hot with fryums and pickle.

How to make sambar rice with step by step images

- Now to the veggies add turmeric powder, salt, red chilli powder, sambar powder and coriander powder. Mix well and add tamarind extract. Mix well. Add required amount of water to cook veggies as well. (I used 1 cup water)
- Allow the veggies to cook with lid on in medium flame. When the veggies look cooked put the flame to low.
- Now to the cooked veggies add mashed dal and rice mixture. Give it a good stir and put off the flame when everything looks combined. Now add little ghee garnish it with chopped cilantro and serve it hot with fryums and pickle.
