Sorghum cookies recipe, Jowar cookies, Millet recipes

Sorghum cookies/ Jowar cookies / Cholam cookies whatsoever name called is a easy to make healthy eggless cookie made with millet flour– a gluten free cereal grain. This ancient grain sorghum/ jowar is high in, protein and fiber, minerals like phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and iron. So adding this grain to our diet is definitely beneficial.

For making this cookie all you need is 6 basic ingredients including one super ingredient jowar flour. I prepared flour at home by slow roasting it first then ground it into fine powder or you can purchase it at any store as they are easily available these days.

I took my heart shaped cookie recipe and modified it as jowar cookies and it turned out good and super healthy. For this recipe I used powdered sugar but if you want your biscuit to be more healthy you can add jaggery powder in same quantity of powdered sugar. Also I used wheat flour/ atta along with jowar flour but you can use just jowar flour for this by adding 1 cup jowar flour and cutting down atta/ whole wheat flour. So try these new and healthy cookies for ur tea time today!

How to make Sorghum cookies with step by step images

  1. Now in a blender add granulated sugar and grind it into fine powder. Keep it aside.
  2. Now in a bowl add jowar flour, whole wheat flour, a pinch of salt, powdered sugar, baking powder and butter at room temperature.
  3. Mix everything together with your fingers as the heat from fingers will help form dough. The mixture will first have crumbly texture then slowly form a dough. If it does not form a dough add ½ to 1 tbsp milk/ water and it should form soft cookie dough. Now place the cookie dough in refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes.
  4. After 30 minutes preheat oven for 350F/ 180C. Meanwhile place parchment paper on a baking tray. Now pinch small portion of dough, make it into roundels then press it gently.
  5. Place the dough on wax paper/ parchment paper. Now press the dough with fork and make a impression just to create design. If you don’t like it skip this step. Repeat the process till all the dough is done. Place each cookie dough with 1 to 2 inch gap. This ensures that cookies don’t stick together when it melts while baking.
  6. Now place the baking tray in the preheated oven and bake foe for 12 to 15 minutes. Mine got baked in 12 minutes. Every oven differs so keep an eye on the cookies after 10 minutes as the chances of excess browning and burning are more. When the cookies are done remove from oven they will be very soft and fragile so place it on cooling rack gently. when the cookies have completely cooled down serve it.
