Chana dal halwa recipe

Chana dal halwa is a delicious and melt in mouth sweet/ dessert prepared by sauteeing ground chana dal paste in ghee and is given richness by adding milk and made it flavorful with cardamom. Usually chana dal halwa is prepared with regular white sugar because of which it attains a beautiful yellow color and in my recipe I used brown sugar/ cane sugar to keep it healthy and that’s why the halwa looks bit different in color. Usually people prefer to relish moong dal halwa including me but thought to try different recipe for this Navratri so prepared halwa with chana dal and I must confess that I got crazy for its taste, texture and flavor specially.
chana dal halwa

This halwa tastes very similar to another halwa recipe which I had posted 3 years back like this Besan halwa (its obvious right) and very different from this recipe TOMATO HALWA. What tomato halwa try the recipe and you shall surely fall for its color and taste.

Sorry to keep you guys boring with sweet/ dessert recipes everyday, but I have a great reason/ happening behind all this hard work. Just 4 more sweets to go and I promise will spam with sweet posts only before Diwali😂 which is next month. Just kidding😉😉

Ingredients
  1. 1. Chana dal – ½ cup
  2. 2. Water – ¼ cup
  3. 3. Milk – ½ cup
  4. 4. Sugar – ½ cup
  5. 5. Cardamom powder – ¼ tsp
  6. 6. Ghee – 4 to 5 tbsp
  7. 7. Pistachios - 1 tsp (chopped, for garnish)
Note
  1. * 1 cup = 235 ml
Instructions
  1. Wash and soak chana dal in enough water for 3 hours. After 3 hours of soaking add the soaked chana dal in a blender and grind it into corse paste adding ¼ cup water. Keep this aside.
  2. Heat ghee in a non stick kadai/ pan. To it add ground chana dal paste and saute it in low flame for about 10 to 12 minutes until nice aroma is released. Keep stirring every now and then to make sure it does not burn. Do not skip the cook time as the halwa will taste raw. After 12 minutes you will notice nice aroma from chana dal and also a mild color change.
  3. Now keep the boiled milk ready in one hand. Gradually add in small portion and stir the besan mixture well. I used ¼ cup first then gradually increased to ½ cup.
  4. Now add ½ cup milk to the chana dal mixture and give it a good stir. Keep stirring it really well that it combines with the chana dal mixture. Cook this mixture for 5 to 6 minutes and you will notice the mixture becoming thick like ball slowly.
  5. Now add brown sugar and cardamom powder to it and mix really well until combined. Finally add ghee and mix it again and put off the flame. Yummy and tasty chana dal halwa is ready. Garnish it with chopped pistachios and serve it.
