Instant milk powder modak, Modak without mould

Instant milk powder modak/ Instant modak without mould is an easy and quick to make sweet that can be made with handful ingredients for the upcoming Ganesh chaturthi festival. This modak is very special as it is made without modak maker/ mould! Yes you heard it right! Want to know the secret then just jump to the recipe quickly.

For the past 2 days I have been posting recipes with too many directions and more healthy (millet and palm jaggery) ones so thought to share a beginner friendly, simple and instant recipe that too without modak maker/ mould.

Ingredients
  1. 1. Milk powder – 1 cup
  2. 2. Whole milk/ Full cream milk- 1 cup
  3. 3. Sugar – 4 tbsp
  4. 4. Cardamom powder – ¼ tsp
  5. 5. Nuts – 1 tbsp (pistachios, almonds and cashews)
  6. 6. Ghee – 1 tsp
Note
  1. * 1 cup = 235 ml
Instructions
  1. Heat a wide non- stick pan to it add milk powder and milk. Mix well so that everything looks well combined without any lumps.
  2. When the mixture is completely mixed add cardamom powder, chopped nuts and sugar. Mix everything well.
  3. At first when the mixture is mixed it will be little watery which will get thicker as you stir.
  4. Keep stirring the mixture and within 8 to 10 minutes it will start thickening gradually and will form a mass/ dough leaving the sides of the pan, At that point take a tiny portion if the mixture and try to make ball, if it forms a non- sticky perfect ball put off the flame and keep the mixture aside and let it cool down. Transfer the mixture to a bowl.
  5. When the mixture is just warm grease your hands with little ghee, pinch small portion of mixture and make it into round shape, then shape/mold it gently into modak shape by keeping it between the thumb and index finger. You can leave it just like that or design it by making lines using fork as shown in the collage. Just get artistic at this stage as there is no hard and fast rule 😁 Repeat the process till all the mixture is over.
  6. Now when all the modak is ready it will be initially fragile and chewy so let it sit for an hour after which they will be perfect. Serve it and store the rest in refrigerator.

How to make Instant milk powder modak with step by step images


  1. Heat a wide non- stick pan to it add milk powder and milk. Mix well so that everything looks well combined without any lumps.

  2. When the mixture is completely mixed add cardamom powder, chopped nuts and sugar. Mix everything well. At first when the mixture is mixed it will be little watery which will get thicker as you stir.
  3. Keep stirring the mixture continuously (otherwise it will stick to bottom) and within 8 to 10 minutes it will start thickening gradually.

  4. When the mixture starts thickening slowly it will form a mass/ dough leaving the sides of the pan, At that point take a tiny portion if the mixture and try to make ball, if it forms a non- sticky perfect ball put off the flame and keep the mixture aside and let it cool down.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Knead the mixture once.

  6. When the mixture is just warm grease your hands with little ghee, pinch small portion of mixture and make it into round shape.

  7. Now mold/ shape the dough ball gently into modak shape by keeping it between the thumb and index finger.
  8. You can leave the modak just like that or design it by making lines using fork as shown in the collage.
