Green moong sprouts, How to make sprouts

Green moong sprouts/ Moong sprouts is a nutritious and healthy food that can be eaten raw or cooked and is prepared by sprouting Whole green moong/ Green gram (soaking in water and allowing it to sprout/ germinate until white tail is formed)

Green moong sprouts are easily available at stores these days that we may have forgotten to make this at home as it is little tricky and time consuming process though it requires less efforts from us and also needs no special equipment in its making. Preparing sprouts at home are more healthier than the one we buy at stores actually. Since there is less access to stores and fresh veggies these days I thought to make sprouts at home and it really worked though we live in cold country.

It took 2 days for my green moong to sprout but was worth the taste as it was super fresh. Sprouting time differs on the weather so the sprouts you prepare might take less or more time than mine.

Moong sprouts can be used in making dishes like these Green moong poriyal/ stir fry, Green moong biryani, Sprouts salad, sprouts pulao and so on. Moong sprouts might not be digestible by everyone so in that case just boil/ steam moong sprouts for 3 to 4 minutes then use in salads. So let’s get to the making!

Ingredients
  1. 1. Green gram dal/ Whole green moong- ½ cup
  2. 2. Water – enough amount to soak moong
Note
  1. * 1 cup = 235 ml
Instructions
  1. In a bowl wash and soak whole green moong for 8 hours or overnight.
  2. After 8 hours or overnight soaking drain the water from the green moong completely. Now wet a muslin cloth, to it add in the soaked green moong and seal tight. Now place the wet muslin cloth in a bowl and cover it with a lid (just cover it with the not locking the bowl) we want the aeration to be there so that it can sprout. Place the bowl in warm place or in a place where the box receives sunlight. I kept in my oven with light on and it took 2 days to sprout as the weather was really cold here. Make sure to keep the cloth wet , so sprinkle some water every 5 hours or so without disturbing the sprouts.
  3. After 2 days you will notice the sprouts seen outside the cloth which is a clear indication that it is done. You can open the cloth and as you see the tiny white tail/ sprouts they are ready to be consumed, but you nay grow it longer as well, but remember shorter the sprouts tastier snd sweet they are. Now use the sprouts in your cooking it refrigerate for 3 to 4 days until future use.
