Bottle gourd and shrimp kootu recipe, Sorakkai kootu

Bottle gourd and shrimp kootu/ Sorakkai kootu is a thick gravy with a combination of bottle gourd / sorrakkai, lentil, shrimp/ prawn. It is a very delicious and very nutritious dish that goes well with rice and dosa. Though it has many steps in its making the output is a worthy one. This recipe belongs to my close friend who does excellent cooking and I liked this kootu in her making more than mine though I followed all the directions that she mentioned. I tried making this curry for the first time and my family loved it and hope your family will adore it too. Thank you chevi for such a yummy recipe. So lets get to the making!

  3. 3. Jeera/ Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
  4. 4. Curry leaves – a spring
NOTE
  1. * 1 cup = 235 ml
Instructions
  1. Wash, Soak and pressure cook chana dal in 1 cup water for 2 whistles. Keep the cooked channa dal along with the water. Do not drain the water as it contains nutrients.
  2. Wash, peel and chop bottle gourd/ sorakkai as seen in the collage.
  3. Now in a pan or pressure cooker add chopped bottle gourd, salt and ½ cup water. Just little water is fine as this vegetable leaves enough water in which it will get cooked. Cook the bottle gourd and keep it aside with water.
  4. In a blender add grated coconut, ginger garlic, green chilli and jeera. Grind it into corse paste adding little water.
  5. Heat oil in a pan/ kadai, to it add mustard seeds when it splutters add urad dal, jeera, and curry leaves. Now add chopped onion and saute. When the onions look sauteed add the coarse ground coconut paste. Saute it for a while. Now add tomato and saute. I forgot to add tomatoes at this stage so added it last which makes no difference in the taste. Now when everything look sauteed add shrimp, salt, add turmeric. Saute well. Let the shrimp cook for 5- 8 minutes. When the shrimp looks cooked add cooked dal and cooked bottle gourd with water. I forgot to add tomatoes with onion so added it here. Allow the mixture to boil well. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve it hot with rice.
